Should You Buy Gold Charms? A Guide

What Is A Bracelet Of Charm?

Charms are tiny ornamental trinkets that have a special and significant meaning for the owner. Charms were formerly popular amulets that protected the user against evil spirits, but they may now be used to symbolize a variety of things including hobbies, passions, and trips.

A charm bracelet is a bracelet with which you may attach your own personal charms to make a bespoke bracelet that has significance and worth for you.

Shopping For Gold Charms?

Today’s jewelry is available in an overwhelming number of materials, and if you are collecting, one approach to narrow down your selections is to stick with items composed of a particular metal or stone, etc. Even if you’re not a collector, learning what to look for while shopping is useful. If you’re looking for antique gold charms at a flea market, auction, estate sale, or antique exhibition, you’ll be more likely to bring home a real treasure if you understand the telltale indications of a genuine gem.

Now it’s time to go into greater detail about gold. It is the oldest precious metal known to humankind, and it was most likely the first material used by humans. Thousands of years ago, experts claim that it was discovered, and it is also mentioned in the Bible. Why would early humans care about gold in the first place? It glimmers and catches your attention, and people were as drawn to “gorgeous things” back then as we are now. It is soft, pliable, and ductile, making it possible for people to shape it into ornaments and other forms long before the invention of today’s sophisticated equipment.

The search for the origins of gold jewelry is as old as the precious metal itself. At the Varna Necropolis in Bulgaria, professionals discovered over 3,000 pieces dating from 4600 to 4200 BC. A gold necklace found near Lake Titicaca in Peru was allegedly almost 4,000 years old.

But, as William Shakespeare pointed out, all glittering (glisters) isn’t gold. At the very least, it’s not pure 24 karat gold. The only real gold is 24 Karat, and it’s an orangey-yellow color. Anything less than 24 Karat and of a different color is a combination of metals and gold. The color of the completed item is determined by what other metals it is combined with – if you combine copper, you get red or rose gold, and if you combine silver, zinc, or other white metals, you get a paler yellow.

A 22 karat item, for example, is composed of 91.6% gold and 8.4% other metals. 18 karat contains 75% gold and 25% other metals, while 16k contains 83.3 percent gold and 16.7 percent other metals (“alloying”). 24k gold is considerably softer than 18k.

History Of Charm Bracelets

Charm bracelets have been utilized for hundreds of years, and while it may appear to be a new idea, they’ve been around since ancient times. Let’s look at the history and development of charm bracelets:

Neolithic Era (over 12,000 years ago) – There’s evidence that these early people used charms to protect themselves from bad spirits and keep them safe. These were constructed of wood, stone,  shell, or bone and carved roughly into a variety of shapes. An uncommonly shaped thing might be utilized as a charm at times. These amulets were kept nearby to shield the owner from harm, frequently worn around the neck. Ancient amulets have been discovered in Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Egyptian Period (about 5000 years ago) – Charms, also known as amulets, were used to bring good luck, ward off evil and protect individuals from harm during this era. People would wear charms onto their jewelry and frequently buried with them in order to accompany them into the afterlife.

Roman Empire (about 2000 years ago) – During the third century, Christians wore charms as a method of identifying themselves to other Christians. This was when Christians were persecuted by Rome. The ichthus, a fish-shaped symbol, was a popular charm during this era. The Code of Jewish Law was written on tiny charms, which were worn around the neck. These charms were meant to serve as a continual reminder of the laws.

Middle Ages (around 1500 years ago) – The Middle Ages featured the use of amulets to help protect people from negative forces. To assist them in combating their foes, the nobility and knights would wear charms during this time. Life was nasty, brutish, and short, so they could use all the luck they could get. Knights used charms as a defense mechanism by keeping them hidden beneath their armor.

Victorian Era (around 150 years ago) – Charms were at their height of popularity during this period. The charm bracelet became fashionable when Queen Victoria started wearing jewelry. She used charms instead of amulets as decorative jewelry. Her influence helped to popularize the charm bracelet trend.

World War II (the 1940s) – Following World War II, the charm bracelet style that we know today took hold. Troops returned home with souvenirs produced by people from the areas where they had fought. The bracelets, necklaces, and rings were given to their families or loved ones as mementos of their experiences during the war. This became a fad among jewelry designers, who began to produce charms as commemorative items for various events.

Modern Era (21st Century) – Charms are still extremely popular. With iconic names like Pandora, Tiffany & Co, and others releasing beautiful charm bracelets in interesting designs and styles, this jewelry type is still fashionable, practical, and attractive.
